Bookings are now being taken for what promises to be one of the most exciting local events of the year: a one-day conference for people living in Derbyshire who are taking action at community-level to tackle climate change.

Derbyshire Community Climate Action Network Conference, which is being run by Derbyshire County Council, takes place at the Derbyshire Eco Centre (Middleton-by-Wirksworth) on Saturday 9th March.

The day will include:

  • National keynote speakers
  • Inspirational workshops from local community groups about their projects
  • The chance to meet lots of other people who are doing similar work
  • Workshops by organisations that can help you in the work you are doing
  • A 'marketplace' of stalls packed full of useful information
  • A purpose-built eco venue with many inspiring features
More information about speakers and workshops will be posted on our website as it is available: www.everybodys-talking.org.

To book your free place contact Nick Pigula on 01629 538304 or nicholas.pigula@derbyshire.gov.uk with your name, contact details and the name of any climate change-focused community group you belong to (you don't need to belong to one to attend). Spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

First Ever Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire EcoHomes Open Week

Over the course of nine days, people across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire who have installed eco features in their homes are planning to open their doors to the public to inspire others to improve their own houses. Visit real, inspiring projects which will show you how to:
  • Make your own home more environmentally friendly
  • Save money by making your home more energy efficient
  • Do things that can be funded under the government’s new Green Deal and ECO programmes
So far homes in Overseal,  Netherfield, Chesterfield, Hockerton, Belper and West Bridgford are involved.

Visit some of the homes

Individual events will be listed in the events section of this website until mid-February when we will be launching a website especially for the event.

Not only will visiting these homes provide you with inspiration, everyone who visits a home will have the chance to enter a prize draw. The prize will be announced in the coming weeks and will help the winner to make their home more environmentally friendly.

Open your own home

We’re sure that there are many more homes in our two counties that have had eco-improvements which could inspire others. If you have a house that you think is suitable let us know. Examples of what you might have done include (but are not limited to):

  • Installed renewable technologies
  • Installed solid wall insulation We’re keen to include homes which have measures which householders will be able to use ECO and Green Deal funding for.
  • Eco-renovated a whole house or room or built an eco house from scratch.
  • Made improvements on a tight budget. We don’t just want expensive high-tech solutions on show.
  • Made a rented home more eco friendly.
  • Incorporated a lot of waste materials into your improvements that would have otherwise ended up in landfill.
  • Produced a lot of your own food in your garden. If you could provide a short tour of how and why you’ve done this, we’d love to include it.
If you like to take part get in touch with Caroline Harmon: caroline.harmon@mea.org.uk.

Energy We Can All Afford

This winter millions of people across the UK will struggle to pay our gas and electricity bills. Cold homes are bad for our health, especially for children and older people. Yet energy prices continue to rise. Now is the time to discuss this, as Parliament is about to debate these critical issues.

Energy We Can all Afford, a coalition of organisations including Friends of the Earth and the Low Carbon Communities Network, is holding public meetings across the UK with local MPs. They are inviting anyone concerned about energy issues and prices to come along, hear what your MP has to say and ask your questions.

Visit www.energywecanallafford.org to find out about meetings in your area. You can also sign a petition for warm homes and lower bills at: www.energybillrevolution.org

Energy we can all afford? is an initiative run by Energy Bill Revolution, Friends of the Earth, the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition, Greenpeace, and the Low Carbon Communities Network.  It is supported by many organisations including Barnardo’s, Children England, Age UK, National Pensioners’ Convention, Girlguiding UK and the Scouts Association, MENCAP, MS Society, Disability Rights UK, the British Youth Council and the National Children’s Bureau, the TUC, UNISON, the National Union of Students and the National Right to Fuel campaign.
