West Bridgford, Nottingham

This 1950's sold wall, detached house has been super-insulated to around Pasivhaus levels. As a result it requires very little heating. The owners say: 'We wanted to take an un-insulated house with a 60 year old kitchen, bathroom and windows, and with damp and mould, and turn it into a comfortable, healthy house with low energy bills and reduced carbon emissions.'

Work done includes:

  •  External wall insulation
  • Ground floor insulation and super-insulation of loft conversion.
  • Air tightness work to minimise heat loss through the building fabric.
  • Triple glazed windows throughout, and quadruple glazed roof window.
  • A ventilation system with heat recovery to provide a continuous supply of fresh air without significant heat loss. It removes stale air and excess moisture which would otherwise be bad for the building and the occupants.
  • Added a porch on the front door and a draught lobby to the back door.
  • PV panels added to the south-facing roof at a late stage in the project.

Tours will be held at 2pm and 3:30pm. Pre booking is essential and can be done at: www.wbecohouses.co.uk.
